Quick intro to Goldratt’s Theory of Constraints (part 0)

After watching Eric Berlow’s TED Talk ‘How Complexity Leads to Simplicity’ I couldn’t help but write Eric an email to introduce him to the Theory of Constraints.

He asked me for a ‘good quick read’ and because I couldn’t find anything I liked, I decided to write my own QIT-GTOC. And then I thought more people might want to benefit from such an effort, so I decided to put it online in installments.

I don’t claim to be original, merely to organize the bits and pieces in one place.

Here’s a preliminary list of what to expect in future (irregular) posts:

  1. The Four Pillars of TOC
  2. The Five Focusing Steps
  3. The Four Principles of Flow
  4. The Thinking Processes
  5. TOC Applications
  6. Is TOC the Grand Theory of Everything?
  7. Resources

Any comments or questions are more than welcome.

GTD, TOC and Personal Kanban

@ourfounder:

@marekkowalczyk:

Choking release of new projects/tasks to prevent bad multitasking is a missing principle of #GTD. TOC and Personal #Kanban have this. #tocot
Excellent point! GTD is great for capturing what you can do&managing backlog,but Personal Kanban helps you focus&prioritize.

Webinar "DBR at Intel" on Nov 10, 2009 (Click me!)

Scott will present a case study about how a team from Intel Corporation was able to reduce order processing cycle time by 50% in a finished goods warehouse operation by applying Theory of Constraints, specifically “Drum-Buffer-Rope”, as well as other continuous improvement methods. Examples of improvement include a 50% reduction in order processing cycle time, 1 day of inventory reduction, and a 10% increase in throughput, all without increasing operating expense. Experiences on how to partner and influence key stakeholders, deliver effective training, and provide essential management and performance measurement tools are shared.

There are only two real rules with personal kanban:

  1. Visualize your work

  2. Limit your work-in-progress

Here are some questions that I think should be answered in every environment:

  1. When should I release work to the team (if you release work as it appears, the team will certainly multitask itself into a total logjam within days!)?
  2. What completion date should I quote for this case (and be confident that it will be delivered on time)?
  3. When must I expedite a case to ensure its on-time completion?
  4. When should I avoid the temptation to tamper and leave well alone?
  5. What is the load on all team members?
  6. When the flow is disrupted, what is the most common cause of that disruption?
